To address the life course-specific risks of single parenthood, an analysis is therefore required that allows for different effects of family policy on the economic situation of single parents. In an international study, this perspective can be implemented by estimating an interaction effect between the indicator for the respective family policy measure and an indicator for the life course phase, such as the age of the youngest child in the household. The single case approach in this chapter also uses the age of the youngest child as an indicator to differentiate between different life course stages in which single parenthood is experienced. It examines how the income of mothers changes considering the age of their youngest child at entry into single parenthood, depending on whether they entered single motherhood before or after the parental leave reform.
